In short: Use this guide to decide whether an ESCI or SSCI journal fits your manuscript and career rules — then verify the title on Clarivate’s lists before you submit. Definitions of SCI/SCIE/ESCI/Scopus live on SCI vs SCIE vs ESCI vs Scopus. This page is the decision playbook, not a duplicate glossary. No indexing or acceptance guarantees.

Authors often land on acronym pages first, then still ask: “Should I submit here?” That second question needs career context, field fit, verification steps and red-flag literacy. Keeping those steps here prevents the glossary page from ballooning into a second services pitch.
Before edition preference, read your university promotion rules, scholarship terms and funder open-access policies. Some count any Web of Science Core Collection title; others name SCIE/SSCI explicitly; others care more about Scopus or journal quality signals than edition labels. Write those constraints down. Edition hunting without constraints wastes months.
ESCI journals are in Clarivate’s Emerging Sources Citation Index when they meet Clarivate’s stated quality criteria for that edition. That is not a coupon for future SSCI/SCIE promotion on a fixed timetable. Treat ESCI as a legitimate Core Collection pathway when the journal’s scope, audience and your institutional rules align — not as a “backup brand” sold by agencies.
Verify the title on the Master Journal List close to submission day. Methods: how to check Scopus and Web of Science indexing.
SSCI covers social sciences journals under Clarivate’s categories. Interdisciplinary health-policy, education and management papers sometimes fit SSCI titles; sometimes they fit SCIE or ESCI better. Read aims and scope and recent tables of contents. Do not pick SSCI only because a colleague’s CV lists it.
Service help for shortlists: journal selection service and Web of Science publication support. Broader packaging: research paper publication support and Scopus publication support when Scopus is also in play.
Edition membership is not the same as quartile rank. Learn how IF/CiteScore/SJR work on impact factor and quartiles. For a selection process aimed at competitive quartiles — without promises — use Q1/Q2 journal selection guide. Never let a consultant sell “Q1 ESCI” as a product.
Record the database, category, edition and retrieval date every time you screenshot a listing. Committees increasingly ask for that evidence trail. Our how to choose a journal guide covers the broader shortlist workflow; this page stays focused on ESCI/SSCI decision points.
Special issues can be legitimate venues inside an indexed title — or a risk if the guest-editor process looks opaque. Verify that the parent journal still appears on the Master Journal List for the year you care about, and read predatory warning signs on predatory journals before you pay any APC.
Name the journal accurately; do not invent indexing claims the MJL does not support. Cover letter editing and the free cover letter guide keep statements modest. Formatting: manuscript formatting. Similarity ethics: similarity report editing.
Edition labels do not pay APCs. Budget with publication fees explained and open access journal selection. APCs remain yours.
A weak manuscript will not be rescued by an ESCI or SSCI logo on the journal homepage. Strengthen the draft with manuscript editing, developmental editing, academic English editing or field pages such as medical manuscript editing when clinical. Submission packaging: submission support, cover letter editing.
If the paper is rejected, re-verify the next journal’s edition listing rather than recycling a cover letter that names the old venue. See resubmit after rejection and desk rejection reasons. Major revisions at the same journal: major revisions response.
Broader vetting: how to choose a publication consultant.
Rules differ by employer. UK researchers should also read UK publication support for article-focused context (not thesis proofreading). GCC authors: Saudi Arabia / GCC and sibling country pages. We are UK registered and online-only.
We are not affiliated with Clarivate or Elsevier. Listings change — re-check before you submit.
It is an author playbook for choosing and verifying Web of Science edition targets — especially ESCI and SSCI — when planning submission. It is not a glossary of every index acronym; that lives on our SCI/SCIE/ESCI vs Scopus page.
That guide explains what the indexes are. This guide focuses on decision steps: when ESCI is a realistic target, how SSCI fields differ, how to verify a title today, and what not to promise yourself or a funder.
No. ESCI coverage means Clarivate has indexed the journal in the Emerging Sources Citation Index under its criteria. It is not a timed promotion ladder you can purchase.
Coverage and metric availability change over time in Clarivate products. Always check the current Journal Citation Reports / Master Journal List entry for the title and year you care about — do not rely on a consultant’s memory.
SSCI is Clarivate’s Social Sciences Citation Index. Many interdisciplinary papers still fit other editions. Choose by journal scope and edition listing, not by your faculty name alone.
No. Indexing and acceptance are not sold. We refuse guarantee claims.
Use Clarivate’s Master Journal List (and JCR where relevant) yourself. Our indexing-check guide shows a careful method. Screenshots go stale; re-check before submission.
Not automatically. Match career rules, funder rules and the journal’s audience. Some institutions weight editions differently — ask your supervisor or research office.
Scopus is a separate Elsevier index. A journal may be in one, both or neither. Compare using official sources, not marketing PDFs.
Yes via journal selection and Web of Science publication support — advisory shortlists with verification, never guarantees.
